The need for neurologists in the care of COVID‐19 patients

In this letter, recently published in the European Journal of Neurology, Sellner et al., emphasise that neurologists need to be part of the multidisciplinary team taking care of COVID-19 patients. This call emerges, on the one hand, from evidence for neuroinvasiveness of coronaviruses, immunopathology in animal models and observations made in previous SARS epidemics. On the other hand, reports of SARS-CoV2 infection with neurological manifestations and complications are emerging. Furthermore, the authors also discuss the growing literature on neurological involvement in COVID-19 infection and the potential spectrum of disease which neurologists may encounter during the course of the pandemic.
