Guided Tour through Finnish Architecture: A Journey to Alvar Aalto House and the Influence of Architecture on Brain Health.

The Alvar Aalto House in Helsinki, Finland, built in 1936, exemplifies human-centred and nature-inspired design. Designed by Alvar Aalto as his home and studio, the house integrates natural materials, large windows, and earthy tones to create a serene, functional space connected to its surroundings. This harmony of architecture and nature fosters calmness and well-being.

Aalto’s work underscores how intentional design can merge aesthetics and health, inspiring spaces that nurture both mind and body. By embracing these principles, we can create environments that enhance brain health and overall well-being.

Empathic and nature-centric designs offer significant brain health benefits. Research shows that environments with natural light, greenery, and organic forms reduce stress and enhance cognitive function. Such spaces promote relaxation, neuroplasticity, and resilience against neurological disorders. In addition, architecture profoundly influences neurology by shaping sensory experiences and behaviour. Thoughtfully designed spaces with natural elements and minimized stimuli can support individuals with conditions, while poor design may worsen neurological symptoms.

Finland has nominated a series of 13 properties designed by architect Alvar Aalto's office for inclusion in the World Heritage List. The properties, named "Aalto Works", represent Aalto's modern and humane architecture. At the request of the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Finnish Heritage Agency has drawn up a nomination proposal, working together with Alvar Aalto Foundation and the stakeholders of the architectural sites.

Sensory Walk in the Finnish Woods: A Journey to Revitalise Mind and Body

Step into the serene embrace of a pristine Finnish forest and embark on a guided Sensory Walk – a transformative experience designed to reawaken your connection to nature while engaging your senses in profound and meaningful ways. The tour will start with short walk from the congress venue to the woods, where the actual sensory walk takes place. The contrast between the city and woodland is striking and can be experienced firsthand.

Under the care of a professional outdoor guide and a neurologist, this immersive activity goes beyond a typical forest stroll. It invites you to heighten your awareness, exploring the subtle textures, soothing sounds, and invigorating scents of the forest. This sensory experience not only nurtures a deep appreciation for the natural world but also offers tangible (brain) health benefits backed by science.

During the walk, the group takes breaks to hear short and insightful congress-theme-related topics focusing on how nature affects our brain. Towards the end, the group is then led back to the venue.

Nature has been shown to reduce stress, enhance mood, and support cognitive function. Immersing yourself in the forest’s diverse stimuli engages your brain in ways that foster creativity, improve focus, and rejuvenate mental clarity. Regular exposure to natural environments also bolsters immune function, reduces cortisol levels, and increases serotonin production. This makes a sensory walk not just a moment of tranquillity but a scientifically grounded investment in your well-being.

Perfect for anyone seeking a meaningful pause in their busy schedules, this experience is especially tailored to those who appreciate the nuanced interplay between environment and the human brain. As you stroll, you’ll experience firsthand how nature’s gifts can enhance mindfulness, inspire innovation, and influence your brain in a positive way.
