Plenary Symposia

All Plenary Symposia take place in the Main Auditorium.

OPENING SESSION (Hybrid)
Saturday, 21 June 2025, 19:00-20:00 (EEST),
Main Auditorium 
The Opening Session is the first of four Plenary Symposia at an EAN Congress. It takes place on Saturday evening.
During this session, the EAN President warmly welcomes all participants, presents highlights of the past year, and provides a preview of some congress highlights. Other EAN Board members and the chair of the Local Organising Committee also make announcements. Typically, a lecture of general interest to neurologists is presented by a keynote speaker.

PRESIDENTIAL SYMPOSIUM (Hybrid)
Sunday, 22 June 2025, 11:00 – 12:30 (EEST),

During the Presidential Symposium, the Named Lectures are presented. One of the Brain Prize awardees is giving a lecture.

HIGHLIGHT and BREAKING NEWS (Hybrid)

The Highlight Session is the last Plenary Session of the EAN Congress organised in the morning of the last congress day.  The Highlight session unites several congress features in one:

  • Highlights of the congress: selected and summarised by local experts
  • Latest news: brand new articles from Lancet neurology
  •  Announcement of Tournament Awardees
  • General information: Presentation of upcoming congress, Handover, thank you and Farewell

Scientific Session Types

OVERARCHING THEME SYMPOSIUM (Hybrid)
Monday, 23 June 2025, 10:30-12:30 (EEST),
Main Auditorium 
This Symposium covers the Overarching Theme of the respective congress. To highlight a topic of actual interest and importance, EAN defines an overarching theme for every congress.

SYMPOSIA (Hybrid)
120 minutes
Symposia are scheduled on each congress day and will last 2 hours each. Lecturers will give general information on the main topics of the congress. Special insight will be covered in Teaching courses and Focused workshops.

FOCUSED WORKSHOPS (Hybrid)
90 minutes
Focused workshops (FW) will be held in the morning and last for 1.5 hours. They will cover narrow topics and will aim to promote discussion around new ideas, evidence or theories. Ample time for discussion will be provided.

SPECIAL SESSIONS (Hybrid)
90 minutes
Special Sessions (SpS) cover topics of special interest, prepared by a certain interest group, or disease sub-specialty in order to engage on a discussion with the audience.

CLINICAL GRAND ROUNDS (Hybrid)
In this session, highly experienced neurologists will interview and examine real patients with difficult or complex neurological conditions. They will discuss the clinical diagnosis, request and review all available diagnostic tests and will end by formulating a final diagnosis

SCIENTIFIC THEATRE (Hybrid)
30 minutes
The Scientific Theatre provides the EAN and its partners with a unique platform to present and showcase their work or projects in an interactive and engaging setting. Located within the exhibition area, the theatre accommodates up to 40 participants, creating an intimate space for presentations and discussions.

TV STUDIO SPECIAL SESSION (Public)
60 minutes
Tune in to the EAN TV Studio Special Sessions; dynamic live broadcasts featuring expert speakers and moderated discussions on key topics in neurology. Streamed globally via the EAN’s social media channels and website, these sessions offer engaging content and diverse speakers, providing valuable insights into the latest developments in the field. TOURNAMENT SESSION (Hybrid)
60–90 minutes
Get ready for a thrilling competition where 10-12 top presenters of clinical and basic science abstracts battle it out to be crowned Tournament Champions. Each contestant has just 5 minutes to present their research and face tough cross-examination from the jury.

Winners will be announced at the end of the session, earning prestigious prizes including free registration, accommodation, and travel bursaries for two EAN congresses!

 

 

Educational Session Types

TEACHING COURSES, TC (Hybrid)
3 hours (2 x 90 minutes with a 30-minute refreshment break)
TCs are held on each congress day in the afternoon. This relatively didactic format is best suited to sharing knowledge to improve the quality of clinical care, research and educational practice. All TCs are aimed primarily at a post-graduate audience. There are 3 levels of TCs:

  • Level 1 (Introductory): Aimed primarily at neurologists in training, or those wishing to refresh/update their basic knowledge in the field. Level 1 can also be suitable for undergraduates or general trainees with a particular interest.
  • Level 2 (Standard): Assumes familiarity with basic clinical knowledge and practice, aimed at specialist trainees or practitioners wishing to update and further develop their knowledge in the field.
  • Level 3 (Advanced): Aimed at specialist trainees or practitioners with a particular interest in that field, covering the latest advances of particular interest to a specialist audience.

HANDS-ON COURSES (Onsite)
Classic Hands-on Courses, HoC
90-120 minutes 
Classic Hands-on Courses are for a limited number of participants only, with some built-in work in smaller groups who attend parallel by rotating to each presenter of the course. Live demonstrations with screening machines are the core of these courses. 
Participation is not included in the registration fee. 
For a limited number of participants only and on a first-come, first-served basis. 

“Bring your own computer” Courses, eHoC
90 minutes
By using an interactive web platform for EEG/Image or other programme evaluation, course participants will have access to anonymised patient cases for a limited time to create an electronic hands-on learning atmosphere. Separate instructions on how to access and use the online application will be provided.
These courses are free of charge and available on a first-come, first-served basis on the days of the sessions. However, you can already reserve a spot for yourself at the time of registration.

CASE-BASED WORKSHOPS, CbW (Onsite)
90 minutes
These workshops are to support knowledge and practice in clinical diagnosis and management in a format which requires the attendees to actively participate, with opportunities for direct discussion/contact with leading experts to discuss the presented cases. 
Participation is included in the registration fee. 
For a limited number of participants only and on a first-come, first-served basis on the days of the sessions.

CONTROVERSY SESSIONS (Hybrid)
45-90 minutes
These sessions allow to give a critical overview of the current and most recent advances on key topics, share knowledge, stimulate debate, and forge opinions on controversial issues of clinical care, research, educational practice and therapy. The audience is asked to give their pro/con feedback at the beginning and the end of the session.

INTERACTIVE SESSIONS (Hybrid)
90 minutes
These sessions are based on case presentations including interactive voting via the polling system of the virtual congress platform. The opinions of colleagues will be collected and integrated in the live summary.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS (Hybrid)
90 minutes
This format shall allow to share and improve knowledge on various career and skills related topics, such as: “how to best write an academic paper”; “how to plan a clinical or scientific study or to apply for a grant”, “how to deal with AI”, “effective communication” etc. These sessions, including the Mentorship Workshop, are open for all participants and primarily aim at a post-graduate audience.

EAN BRAIN CHALLENGE (Hybrid)
Sunday, 22 June 2025, 15:30 – 17:00, Main Auditorium
The session will give a platform for interactive learning using quiz questions. Two competing teams, a local team and an international team, will try to win the BrainChallenge by giving the correct answer to the case-presentations. The audience can silently vote via the virtual congress platform, when logging into the session. Results will be presented after each case
